Repatriation, Restitution, and Reparations typically speaks to cultural heritage. The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) has launched the Voluntary Repatriation, Restitution, and Reparations project with the Center for the Future of Museums. In 2023, they published, “The First Horizon: Understanding the State of Voluntary Repatriation, Restitution, and Reparations Today“. Download your free copy and use the report’s worksheet to begin framing your thoughts on the evolution of museum practice.

What is repatriation?
Repatriation is the process whereby certain types of cultural items are returned to lineal descendants, culturally affiliated Indian tribes, Alaska Native villages and corporations, and Native Hawaiian organizations. Human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony are legally defined categories of items that may be considered for repatriation.
